Increase traffic through blog commenting

This is a guest post by Christine Kane.

blog commenting to drive traffic Building up your blog’s traffic can be a long and slow process because it takes time to build a steady, strong, and consistent readership. There are several different ways that you can direct more traffic to your site, and one way that you can spike your traffic numbers is by becoming active within your blogging niche’s community and forming relationships with other bloggers. To do this effectively you should consider utilize blog commenting to your advantage. When you’re writing out blog comments on other people’s blogs keep these things in mind:

1. Comment immediately

This isn’t a tactic that will always work unless you’re glued to your computer 100% of the time and are constantly checking to see if bloggers have updated, but when you can try to be one of the first commenters on a post. If you can secure that first position then you’ll end up being a comment that almost every other commenter will read, thus increasing your chances of others clicking back over to your blog.

2. Have a voice

Don’t just be another generic “this is great” comment on a blog because no one will be interested in further reading what you have to say on your own blog that way. When you write a comment, you should make sure that you have a unique voice that shows you took the time to not only read the post thoroughly but to also spend time crafting a quality response. It is these types of comments that pique people’s interest because they’re so well-written that they compel other readers to visit your blog.

3. Comment frequently

The only way that you’re going to form any lasting relationships with other bloggers is to comment frequently so that they begin to recognize you as a regular reader. Forming relationships with other bloggers opens up different opportunities such as guest posting for other bloggers, being featured on their sites, or even exchanging links to great posts that either of you have written.

4. Have a Gravatar

Because blogging is done solely behind a computer screen it’s important to give yourself a face so that people begin to feel more connected to you. Personality through words is only one step of becoming a real person to readers, and having a Gravatar allows them to see you in a new light. It also helps bloggers pick up quickly that you are a regular reader and commenter, and people are more compelled to click on your site from a comment when they can put a face to a name.

5. Respond to other commenters

In addition to commenting on someone’s post you should also read through the other comments and reply back to things that other commenters have said. This encourages healthy conversation and debate within the comment’s section of blogs – something that every blogger loves – and it can also help intrigue other reader’s curiosity in what else you may be saying outside of the comment’s section and on your own blog.

6. Don’t come across as spam

There is nothing worse than looking like a spammer that is just out to drop links all over the blogging world and not an actual blogger who just has something to say. Avoid linking excessively to past posts you may have written and only link to your blog where it’s relevant.

7. Debate not disparage

From time to time bloggers can write some pretty controversial posts, and when they do it’s a great opportunity to get out your point of view in the comment’s section. However there is a big difference between tactfully voicing your opinion or stance on a situation and completely vilifying other people for their beliefs. Approach these types of post with caution and be wary in how you word things so that you encourage people to read your blog; you don’t want to lose potential readers because you came across as rude and insensitive.

Blog commenting isn’t as simple as just writing out a two-word comment on someone’s post. In fact it actually requires time and effort, and can end up being an extremely effective tool for taking other people’s traffic and turning it into your own when it’s done well. Don’t just be another statistic in the comment’s section, be a real person that other’s want to interact with!

good suggestion...but can you add something about follow/non follow blogs and effect of commenting on them?? is comments on no follow blogs can help you anyway?

Anne Lyken-Garner March 28, 2012 at 11:09 PM

You're right. You can always tell when someone has just been passing through - from your blog to another - in order to leave a general comment. Sometimes people say exactly what I've said in the post and I think, how embarrassing for them.

People take a long time planning and writing up their post. It's the least we could do, to read it in its entirety. Great post about commenting BTW.

@Oluwayomi Obadina: My policy is to reject comments as Spam if they have any links that are not 100% adding value to the comment. This especially applies to signatures - the purpose of my blog is not to advertise yours! But if you have a link that is 100% relevant to the topic, I will approve it, and may even add it to my post later on.

Thank you Christine. I am just starting as a personal blogger. Your inputs have added more information and have actually aroused my interest and curiosity as well. At this stage, I feel very amateurish to blogosphere, that is why I'm taking careful time in reading and re reading and internalizing all inputs so that I could come out as a clean, effective and credible blogger just like you do.

If you want to get enough traffic through blog commenting method. Make sure to leave 100 comments (per day) at different 100 blogs which active and have high traffic. Don't spam, leave good quality comments that related to the posts only to them.

Nice post Christine! I'd love to be the first commenter on a bolog I love to read. But it is often not possible. I've subscribed to their feed as well, but I found that feeds are updated much later than the post is published. It would be awesome if there was a some tool to inform immediately when a post is published. Is there any tool for the kind of job?

Hey Christine, am glad you did spoke from your mind. Someone said "if you talk to a man in the language he understand it goes to his head, but if you speak to him in his own language it goes to his mind". Your writing really went down my mind. Immediately after reading this post, I started drafting a blue print of my blog. I will need more tips later from you about the best affiliate programs, product review companies, site ads display companies dat accepts international because I live in Africa-Nigeria.
Over the years, av got several ebooks, tapes, videos and joined several money making programs online hoping to make passive income, but all effort proved abortive because they were d only ones making money and lastly, they do not accept Nigerians. Today, every online traffic generating bareers has been broken to pieces by reading your post. The Bible says "and ye shall know the truth but the truth shall set you free". I can boldly say that, your article today has set me free from online income bondage. Diplomatic Jerry Singer
