Social media can play two roles - which is where many folks who haven't had to run a marketing channel get confused.

1 - Customer Acquisition / Lead Generation - where you are using these sites to acquire new customers; this can be further split into advertising and "organic / viral" efforts where your content is driving the spread of the message.

The first of these is basically just an online ad campaign, so the math on this should be familar (Direct Marketing conversion analytics + some premium for brand building). The second... is a lottery ticket. "Viral" traffic can build add a lot of new accounts for free but it is very hard to predict what content will actually generate a viral trend. (at least in terms of content that doesn't 86 the rest of your brand)

2 - Relationship Development... Again, two variants:

a) cross-marketing into a set of existing relationships (the Jimmy Choo example) - straightforward marketing campaign.

b) strategic messaging over time...

There's also a unique risk to using social for relationship management - there are certain types of products / services where the demand is sufficiently erratic / non-recurring and the content is sufficiently boring (think car transmission replacement) that relationship building is of less value and might even backfire. For example - auto-body repair (kind of a one shot deal) or certain medical topics; for this space, a blogging strategy (with good SEO) might work better.

It is true that paying money to show ads of our business to a targeted traffic is worth. In today's world no one can deny the importance of spending money to show ads in social media like facebook, twitter etc.

In a publisher point of view as shown in the info-graphics, clients will look the facebook fan count, traffic etc to determine the correct bidding for ads spot our website. In twitter sometimes we face the issues of spam but they are controlling it with strict monitoring.
