How to add a Pinterest Follow button

Pinterest follow me button tutorial

Since we published How to add Pinterest Pin It button/counter to Blogger  (which is by the way the only Pin It counter that works on Blogger), several readers contacted us and asked for yet another button -a Pinterest Follow button.

Following using this button is a two-step process. Clicking the button first takes readers to your profile page where all your boards are displayed. From there, they can then choose to follow each board individually or choose to Follow All boards at once by clicking the respective buttons.

Here we go,

I) Button code

Below are a list of available buttons provided by Pinterest on their website.

Follow button

Follow Me on Pinterest <a href=""><img src="" width="169" height="28" alt="Follow Me on Pinterest" /></a>
Follow Me on Pinterest <a href=""><img src="" width="80" height="28" alt="Follow Me on Pinterest" /></a>
Follow Me on Pinterest <a href=""><img src="" width="60" height="60" alt="Follow Me on Pinterest" /></a>
Follow Me on Pinterest <a href=""><img src="" width="16" height="16" alt="Follow Me on Pinterest" /></a>

II) Adding code to blog

  • Adding to Blogger
    1. Go to Layout > Add A Gadget and select HTML/Javascript.
    2. Copy a code above and paste it inside the content box.
    3. Replace “USERNAME” with your Pinterest username.
    4. Save.
  • Adding to WordPress
    1. Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Available Widgets.
    2. Drag Text widget into a sidebar.
    3. Paste in the code.
    4. Replace “USERNAME” with your Pinterest username.
    5. Save.

Great tutorial. It seemed so simple, thanks to your very detailed tutorial. However, about pinterest. I never actually had an account. I've been seeing a lot of people using. I might give it a try and pin it to my blog too.

Anonymous,  November 12, 2012 at 7:42 AM

why is this not working for me? do i delete the http// in the bar before I paste the code? sorry if this is a dumb question. Yes, I added my username where it said "USERNAME". Arrrrg.

Greenlava November 14, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Don't remove anything, you want to copy the entire code.

Paula @ Vintage Kitchen November 21, 2012 at 6:34 AM

I pasted the code a few months ago and it was working fine. Today I wanted to move where it was placed. I deleted and then copied and pasted again. The pin shows but not the count.
Do you know what might have happened? I have three friends on fb talking about the same thing, their count dissapeared.

Restore and Renew November 22, 2012 at 6:21 AM

Thank you, these directions are clear and to the point. Worked first time.

Kelly November 25, 2012 at 6:50 AM

I added in my user name, but when I enter the code in blogger I either get a message that says "Url contains illegal characters" or "url must contain a host name". What could I be doing wrong?

Greenlava November 25, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Did you by any chance mistakenly click the "Add your own" link on the left side of Add A Gadget page?
What you want is to scroll down the page and click "HTML/JavaScript". It's the 11th item in the list.

Kelly November 27, 2012 at 6:41 AM

Yes, that's what I was doing wrong- thanks so much!

Unknown November 30, 2012 at 11:57 PM

Finally! I've looked everywhere on the internets for an easy to do button. I'm no coder so this was perfect. Thanks!

Unknown January 3, 2013 at 3:07 AM

Hi, this was a well written tutorial but I see it was written a while ago. Do you know if Blogger has changed something on their end? When I go to layout, it doesn't give me the option to view it HTML. I can only view it in HTML from the template page and from there, I can't clearly find where I should past the code you provided. Any help you can give would be appreciated, my blog is all about Pinterest so I really need a Pin it button!

Greenlava January 4, 2013 at 2:03 AM

@Jennifer Calero
You paste the code into a HTML/Javascript widget/gadget, so there's no need to view your template HTML.

I got the follow button on my sidebar, but the link always goes to "Oops, Go Back" which goes to an overall view of Pinterest, but then I have to click on my face icon to go directly to my Pinterest. I don't understand!
